That's the impression I get from the trailer at least. I haven't read the book. The premise is that the guy who created the OASIS virtual reality was basically a complete recluse who grew up in the 80's. He was obsessed with 80's video games and pop culture. He hid a bunch of easter eggs in the OASIS, and when he died his will stated that whoever could find the all of the easter eggs and complete the challenge would inherit everything he owned, including the OASIS itself. So, being that the world's largest fortune was up for grabs, the entire world became obsessed with 80's pop culture in order to decipher and find the easter eggs.
