As humanity progresses and science progresses we should be more knowledgable as a society to refrain from doing more and more dumb shit. People then didn't have the technology we do now. So they didn't know corsets would fuck up your spine and ribs. They didn't know smoking was bad for you. The "cigarette diet" was from the damn 20's. They didn't know ingesting most of the shit they did was bad. You can at least make excuses for their ignorance.
