I rarely watch movies, so a ton of them. I haven't seen Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, etc. nor have I read any of their books. I keep saying I'll get around to watching more stuff eventually but it never happens haha

I watched the Harry Potter series of films this year for the first time. They were... unremarkable.

The actual story is butchered in the movies by a few seemingly minor story changes, a bigger focus on appealing to children with magical hijinks as opposed to dialogue and development, and a change in directors every movie. A lot of what makes the books great is the character development as well as excellent foreshadowing. The movies fail in those regards. What saves the movies was the incredible casting and acting. Rickman, Fiennes, Gleeson, Isaacs, Oldman, and on and on.

I highly recommend the books though.

I could see some of this, because they barely deal with any characters that are not Harry Potter, and I could tell that there was more to the stories than simply Harry Potter. It would be like trying to tell Game of Thrones and focusing only on Jon Snow. Except Harry Potter himself is a pretty important but bland and unremarkable character. Just another messiah character with a parent complex, in a sea of them.

To be fair the movies never truly annoyed me (except for the glum tone of the final two). It's fun to see eccentric British acting in all its glory. I agree generally with fans that Prisoner of Azkaban is a good movie, even separate from Harry Potter. But I feel like there wasn't that much meat on the bone story-wise. I bet the books add detail, but I'm not really sure if I care to hear the details.
