Couldn't you argue that his increased "popularity" as you put it, was accompanied by increased scrutiny that resulted in uncovering his old comments? No Because he was popular for years, during which people refused to debate him, protested his tours, harrased him etc. But it was when he was on Bill Mahers show and actually listened too that people paid attention to what he said. Once people actually heard the guy they checked out some of the things he said, challenged him and he crumbled.
