All ff games up to 13 were linear. Most of them just hid it better.

Plot progression was linear but you had a lot of agency in what you did in between plot points. All of the previous games except 10 give you a point where you have to go to progress the plot, but you're free to fuck around and do what you want until then. In XIII there is nothing to do, you either proceed down the straight line or stand in place and do nothing.

Can you give an example from each game where this was the case?

This applies to pretty much all of the games so I don't need to list something from each individual game.

The usual formula is that you get a world map, you can explore it with maybe some restrictions early on like needing a boat or aircraft. You can go into towns and buy equipment, maybe grind out some levels and abilities. You can find side quests, talk to NPCs, find out interesting things about the world. You might find some bonus dungeon where the enemies wreck your shit or you might find hidden treasure in a place you otherwise would have missed.

I really like that general gameplay loop, but XIII has none of that.
