You can be compelled to testify against other people, but not yourself and requires you be subpoenaed. If you plead the 5th and the prosecution really wants your testimony, they can try and get you immunity for whatever crimes your testimony would incrimate you for. If you have immunity then you can't incriminate yourself, and therefore the 5th amendmend doesn't apply.
