China doesn't want any trouble while it's trying to consolidate its power in East Asia. WWIII breaking out would pretty much destroy any hope of them achieving their goals for the foreseeable future. Trump throwing his weight around and being unpredictable made that scenario plausible enough for Xi and Kim to want to work something out. What's good for China is good for North Korea, but only as long as China supports them. So basically Trump not being your typical safety net pushover president actually helped matters? Cool.
