Say you make 150k 20k - 0 in taxes 20-30k - 1500 in taxes 30-50k - 4000 in taxes 50-75k - 6250 in taxes 75-100k - 7500 in taxes 100-150k - 17500 in taxes Net total: 36,750 in taxes, or 24.5%, even though you're currently in the "35%" tax bracket.
