First off, kudos to these girls. I love seeing students accomplish innovations like this, and I'm really proud of them. I hope they have a bright future ahead.
I don't really see why they deserve any special acknowledgment for that, since their accomplishment stands on itself. But once you open the door to "vote for us because we're black and female," you are opening the door to people voting against them for the same reason. There was no reason to ever bring identity politics into this in the first place.
None of this excuses the idiots at 4chan in any form, BTW.
