Beyond that I actually find it actively unappealing when movies needlessly crank the stakes too high. You can have a compelling story without the world/all life in the universe being at risk every time. When everyone just dials it up to 11 by default, you start to get numb to it.

this is exactly what TLJ did, though. and it had all its most important characters survive by dumb luck.

it also seems to remove the importance of consequence from the canon. episode 7 has the resistance dealing a tremendous blow to the first order, yet for some reason the resistance in worse condition than ever merely days chronologically later.
