But yeah pretty big overreaction. The kids were jerks but beating one into unconsciousness is pretty crazy for just ringing a doorbell. Not that any physical assault would be warranted in the case but if he had just knocked them over and yelled at them or something I'd probably "Fair, next," but he went too far. Don't feel bad for the kid, though, assuming he fully recovers. I did dumb stuff when I was a teenager and while this certainly never happened, I couldn't have blamed anyone but myself if it did.
