Ron Hubbard turned a story into a religion that heavily brainwashes it's followers, and charges huge sums of money in order to go up tiers to the point you would learn the true secrets of life, etc, etc. It's incredibly difficult to leave, and if you do they're known to have people follow you, hire private investigators to go through your stuff and track you, make hate websites about you, create false accusations, and even blackmail or sue you. It's not that it's popular with celebrities, it's just that like others many were born into a family whose parents were already members.
