You can tell the range of stats by how the Pokemon is described. Most higher level players check iv or ask their team leader to rate their Pokemon, right after catching then dust it or save it. But it definitely does make a difference and should be accounted for. I made the newb mistake of sinking resources into low level low iv monsters.
