In America the ideal is to break off from your parents ASAP to live on your own. For many, this has brought along a lot of resentment to parents beyond normal teenage emotions since its considered generally good to be independent as an adult. Its difficult often to separate complete financial independence psychologically from also being separated emotionally from your parents when youre in your late teens/early 20s.
