The Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic user scores are basically garbage, at least for anything remotely contraversial. I don't say this with any malice intended towards those sites - it's just a simple fact that self-selecting surveys aren't remotely representative. This is... Statistics 101 basically. If you want an actual reflection of audience opinion you need to use a random sample.

CinemaScore does this, for instance, and The Last Jedi looks just fine there (it got an A, which is the same score that The Force Awakens and Rogue One got, and better than the prequels and Solo).

That said,

I fucking adored TLJ and I was barely even aware that Solo had come out. Really felt to me like Disney had very little faith in this movie, and that in turn made me, a massive Star Wars fan, shy away from opening weekend.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel. What little I heard about Solo in the months leading up to its release was mostly negative, like "hey rumour is the new Solo actor is terrible". Now that it's actually out it sounds like people are pleasantly surprised, but only in the sense that the movie might actually be pretty good when it was expected to be... less than that.
