The term came before the hateful group, actually. It was coined in the early 90's by a woman who couldn't get sex.
What would you prefer people who are involuntarily celibate call themselves? Just stick to the long, unraveled saying? It sucks when a bad group brings attention to a term and that term becomes solely based on said group, it makes it harder for legitimately normal people to have something to associate with and express themselves. Imagine if 'republican' and 'democrat' became banned for the toxic people that follow those ideologies, would you prefer people to list off a million things related to the terms that simplify what they are saying?
