You should probably equip the jump shoes to use jump on any enemy and power up the regular jump spell by using it about as much as possible, but don't go overboard either.

Mario's first spell, Jump, gains 1 point of magic power for every two times it is used. This is a permanent increase in power for the spell. Using it frequently should allow you to power through much of the early game. This will eventually cap at 127 power (255 jumps max). This boost doesn't apply to Super or Ultra Jump.
