A character getting a karate chop to the back of the head and making a funny yelp and having an oversized bandage there after is just slapstick. Even though that would obviously be assault in real life, that sort of thing doesn't bother me at all (unless it's done really wrong I guess but I can't think of any examples off the top of my head). Like pyre said, actual serious abuse can be okay too if it's taken seriously and the ramifications are honestly explored. Sadly, this sort of thing is mostly used to add meaningless edginess in my experience.
