You can take terrible shoes, slap a designer brand on them, and people will go nuts to buy them for $200+. I generally wouldn't pay more than $50 on sneakers, since they're not built to last. (PF Flyers and Palladiums are pretty damn good in that range.) When you get outside the realm of athletic shoes, where they can be repaired and resoled, splurge.
