bordlerline alcoholic smoker; you sure he's in good shape?

do you just mean he could probably beat me up?

I worked a summer firefighting on his crew when he was 58 or 59. I was one of two guys on an 8 man crew who would keep up with him in terms of strength or cardio.

I was also the 2nd oldest guy on that crew behind my dad. And the other guy who could keep up with us also smoked.

Diet and exercise all day man. Smoking is bad and has a very significant effect.... But it's not some magical inherent barrier to being physically healthy either.

There was a day we found a burning stump that was nearly a one kilometre hike across steep unstable shale that we could only get water on with piss cans (back pack water guns essentially) and the only 3 who didn't collapse and give out were me, my old man, and a 21 year old smoker. Everyone else was shy of 30 and didn't smoke and they physically couldn't keep going after hiking back and forth a dozen times. We kept it up 3 times as long.
