I am a big fan of Ascension, though. I know deckbuilders aren't the same as board games, but I think they're in a similar enough genre to mention.
Check out a game called Clank. It's a deck builder that's also a board game. It's a on of fun. Multiple ways to build a deck and tons of room for experimentation.

How hard is Scythe? I almost picked it up when I was at the local board game store the other day. I don't want to get it if it's too hard because the girlfriend won't ever play it. Also how's the solo player game?
Give yourself a few hours to learn it, maybe even a practice game or two but it's a ton of fun. I haven't played single player. I played it at a friend's house (she already knew how to play and was teaching the rest of us).
