The only way to build credit is to responsibly manage credit lines and loans. Don't take interest rates into consideration - cards don't compound interest for a set amount of time after a charge (it varies by card so read the terms carefully), so as long as you're paying it off regularly you won't pay a cent more than what the purchase was for originally.
