Most pilots never get off the ground on broadcast TV. Putting a product like Roseanne out there is always going to be a safer bet than an entirely new show, even if Roseanne herself isn't on the show.

yeah no...this show is gonna go up in flames so fast ABC's gonna be breaking down the door just to put out the fire

and if abc disagrees then maybe they shouldn't have canned it in the first place racist tweet or not

if the solution is just a crappier version of roseanne then you aren't thinking hard enough

The solution is viewers, which this show will get as opposed to a brand new pilot that doesn't come with a built in viewerbase. Viewers = ad money. How is this difficult for you?

because you are just assuming as many people will come flocking to a spin off as they did to the Roseanne return...

instead of salvaging a show that had been canned by another network or anything that's not been tainted by Roseanne's image

they decide to spin off the show and pretend Roseanne never existed

Uhhh no. I'm assuming that a large part of it's built in fanbase that have latched on to this show not even months ago will still watch the show without Roseanne. No, it likely won't be everyone but it's still a bigger guarantee than a show that hasn't proven yourself.

And reviving a dying show from another network is something you literally just brought up so nice moving the goalposts but you should know cross-network revivals like Brooklyn 99 are not the norm in the TV industry. The show was cancelled with less than 2 million people watching it's episodes. That's how it is for most shows that get revived. Almost no one is watching them so it's up to the network to believe in a small, dedicated fanbase as opposed to the sure thing that is the generic television viewer.

Roseanne (season 10) premiered with almost 20 million people and averaged at least 10 million people for the rest of that season. If even HALF of the people that watched that season watch the show without her, it's still a bigger success than what shows like Brooklyn 99 pull and that's just facts. Heck, it's at least twice as popular off the bat.

I can pull the same example with a revived show like Expanse considering they've only had more than a million people watching their show at once only one time in it's entire lifespan. I know you're just going to disregard this and move the goalposts again but ratings are #1 in TV and Roseanne (sans Roseanne) will bring those for sure. Untested shows or shows that were already cancelled due to ratings will not.
