Not intelligence, wealth or being a "good" person. The ability to hold off on small short term benefits for greater long term benefits is king. Sadly it seems to be something this generation lacks in any great capacity. I think one of the most striking and important example of this "mindset" (or lack thereof) is the modern attitude towards the intimate connection between a man and a woman. Pre-marital sex is a textbook example of what I mean by going for a small benefit out of a want for self control. What is really sad about it is, unlike many other examples where the person will later realize their mistake, this kind of behavior is just accepted as normal these days. The men think they're somehow the top dogs for sleeping around (even when the average woman, at no prior point in history, had as many sexual partners as now) and the women think it is """empowering""" or some such nonsense. Mind you, I am not saying people should not have the right to act as such, in fact it is a useful tool for determining who is acceptable to associate with, but society has fallen quite far to go as far as to defend such acts. A society that champions lust and other base animal instincts over reason and restraint is one sick with a fatal illness. Truly, my co-workers have mentioned to me more than once that I need to go out and "get some" and look at me with the baffled faces of brute beasts when I try to explain my points to them, which are essentially facts. I plan on speaking to HR if the subject is brought up again (not because it bothers me, but it really is not an appropriate conversation topic for work) but I know it would ultimately do no good. If I had any political power I'd put laws into effect that would heavily fine anyone who produced a child without a marriage license and make said licenses legal contracts that would actually be enforceable (for example, cheaters would be jailed and divorce would be illegal).

Oh well, that'll never happen. No politician would do anything to displease such a large percentage of the masses, even if it was for the kind term benefit of the country, and we are back to square one.
