Maybe relevance, and attachment is the issue. I am young, and not american, and i live in 2018, raised in generally liberal household surrounded by mostly liberal people. The view on the themes like racism, inequalities and other stuff is nothing new for me and stories that brought up more or less the same theme has been done countless time in the time which we are living right now.

here's the thing: a ton of those stories were influenced by, or directly inspired by, the novel you just read.

it's like why a lot of shakespeare seems cliche--because we had four hundred years of imitators afterward.

Good enough. It's really just more or less the changing of times, pre-exposure and 50 years gap of cultural advancement that makes the book just "pretty good" and not "OMFG THIS IS SUCH AN OPUS NOW EVERYONE READ THIS BEFORE YOU DIE OR YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!!!"
