It's more like bringing balance to election. Native USA intel supported one candidate. Russia felt pity for other candidates had no chance with lopsided bias, and so wanted to give the unfavored candidates just a sliver of hope.

Russia/Putin felt that a Trump leadership would be disastrous, so they made sure he won. And they were right! The US is a freaking shell of it's former self. Literally every chance Trump had to do the right thing, he did the exact opposite. Also, having no allies is a problem. Like, your best relationship right now is with Russia (Because they handed Trump the presidency, so he owes them) and North Korea (that one is quite rocky). Europe hates you, Canada mildly dislikes you (which is Canadian for "hate"), Mexico hates you, etc. etc.
