A Christian terrorist group called the Sons of Jacob kill the president and overthrow the US government putting their own commanders in charge and make the Old Testament law. The country has been renamed The Republic of Gilead. Fertile women are enslaved as Handmaids, one per household. Their job is to serve their commander and take part in "The Ritual" where they are raped and impregnated. They will then carry the child who upon birth will become the child of the commander and his wife. Rinse and repeat. Anyone that deviates from the law is either punished through mutilation, sent to a nuclear wasteland called The Colonies to do hard labour, or you're executed. Few have escaped to Canada and Mexico. The streets are lined with armed military personnel. Many men are put into camps. Children are taken from their families and reassigned. and on top of all of this, the lead actress irl is a Scientologist (and she sees no connection to her character, and her "religion")..... --- ...
