I'm sure there are some technical differences, but it's basically the same as a storage bin or toy chest. I'm guessing most houses have at least one.

As for being called a boot, I was lost on it until I realized the opposite end (the hood in the US) is called the bonnet in those parts of the world (based on watching Top Gear). Thinking of a baby, you put a bonnet on the head and boots on the feet. At least, that's my guess.


I don't think it has any connection with babies cloths but eh it's as good of a guess as any because I've got nothing.
