Not to mention Colombia was a tougher Round of 16 opponent than Japan, and nearly knocked England out. Beyond that it was like others said - a freak occurance with traditional powers underperforming. It's like the NCAA basketball tournament in the US, or any tournament that doesn't reseed teams between rounds - you play who's in front of you. Sometimes there's upsets that can clear a path for you, sometimes not. Also I commend Belgium on playing to win against England. Much better mentality.
