This whole "left eating itself" nonsense really tickles me. Because democrats can make criticism of other democrats, that's a terrible thing. Better to blindly follow, no matter what. Party before integrity, that's the main thing.

It's less about democrats making criticisms or party integrity. The "left eating the left" meme stems from people who enjoy watching highly judgmental people come under the same unreasonable scrutiny as they hold against others, and watching them get crushed using the tools of their creation. Like having someone who thinks that someone having a right-wing opinion on twitter should get them fired... being fired for something they posted on twitter after a mob goes off on them for saying it.

Would you prefer they weren't held to that standard simply because we agree with them on other issues?

I'm sorry... who is "they" in this instance? I wasn't taking a stance on anything, simply trying to elaborate on the meaning behind "the left eating their own" as a concept. I'm sure people on the right have the same thing happen (say, an open gun advocate getting robbed at gunpoint), but there isn't a term for that as far as I know.

Your version of events sounds nice in theory but I'm not entirely sure it's accurate.

Oh no, you're totally correct. This isn't an instance of "the left eating itself" at all. I'm just pointing out that the term is about more than simple criticism.
