Witcher 3 is pretty much a sequel to the books. It feels almost necessary to have read them to fully understand what's going on with the story. Which is weird because that's not the case with the first two games.

I didn't read any of the books, but I very much felt like I would not have appreciated a lot of the characters nearly as much if I hadn't played the second game.

That's really my only major criticism of Witcher 3. A lot of the returning characters such as Triss, Roche, Ves, Dandelion, and a few others felt really hollow and not well fleshed out. Without the context of Witcher 2's excellent character writing I probably would not have thought much of any of these characters. Ves and Roche were particularly flat in 3.

And they made Triss kind of annoying, which really hurt after Witcher 2 established her as my irl forever waifu
