he WAS. he was always called Captain Marvel until 2011. I don't remember when the problems started but a long time ago, like before we were even born, they had to stop naming the series Captain Marvel, and called it "Shazam!" but inside the comic, they still named him Captain Marvel. they just couldn't say it on the cover. it has to do with Marvel getting hold of the copyright of the name Captain Marvel.

finally in 2011 they did a huge universe reboot and since everything was starting over anyway they finally got sick of the little awkward dance around the name. so they just made his name officially Shazam. but originally Shazam was not his name but the word he says to transform
