I imagine Disney knew but was (reasonably) unconcerned with his old tweets, right until they were faced with the imminent prospect of a controversy over them. Then to nip that controversy in the bud, they fired him. I don't think it's a particularly unreasonable action for DISNEY to take, but I also don't think it was the right one.

Would have preferred to see them say "Yes we knew about these old bad tweets, and we had discussed them with James Gunn, and in light of the fact that they were nothing more than old bad tweets, and nothing like that has come from him for years, or ever will again (at least so long as he works for us), it's water under the bridge." But again, it's Disney, and firing him is a much easier way to protect the brand than any nuanced approach and the controversy that bloggers and media outlets would surely stoke into a wildfire.
