Fahrenheit: "Let's pick some arbitrary thing's temperature and make it 32."
Celcius: "Let's pick some arbitrary thing's temperature and make it 0."
Kelvin / Rankine: "Let's define zero as the lowest possible temperature that can exist."

I'd say celcius isn't much more sensible than fahrenheit, in that regard. Celcius makes more sense to me because I'm used to it, but if I actually think about it, it's really just as arbitrary and nonsensical - the only real difference is how much of a change 1 degree represents.


Yes but think about it in the terms of the ordinary man and woman on the street.

A baseline should be 0, it is in most other walks of life. Anything below zero - freezing anything above - normal. Simple.
