Yeah you have to factor in the difference in premiums between the two, how often you go to doctors in a typical year, HSA contributions made by your employer and your own HSA contributions. If you're young and healthy odds are you will be better off with a HDHP.


It's highly variable, but on average, Yyu usually only need one unexpected medical expense for the premium savings from selecting a HDHP to be wiped out.

To be fair, the calculation is different for people with a spouse and kids, but they also expect to have medical expenses more regularly.
