Why is he waisting money on rallies? What are the purposes of them? Is anything of importance done with them or are they just a way for him to toot his own horn?

These rallies serve several purposes.
1) It gives him a platform (without something something twitter derpity derr) to share fake news directly with people who hate logic and reason.
2) It allow him to generate support for his supporters among his supporters.
3) The size of the crowds in attendance prove that lemmings enjoy following other lemmings off cliffs.
4) It gives non-minded people an opportunity to be in the presence of the lemming at the front of the line.

I could go on and on, but I'm sure that you can see the value of these events.

I mean, value isn't the word I would use, but I do understand your point, yes.
