There is a direct continuity, and those books are still popular. So yes you would absolutely be opening the floodgates and I don't think anyone wants a contest filled with characters who are eligible because they've been in some trash licenced games. The way it currently is allows existing characters if their game version is their own distinct character (Dracula, Amaterasu), and that's fine.
