Which is better? HIMYM, but Friends is probably more consistent and had a much better finale. HIMYM's finale was so bad that it actually made re-watching the show difficult. It not only glosses over all the story threads that were built up (Robin's career, how Marshall saved the world, Lily's career, etc) and not only does it completely rewrite three seasons worth of Barney's character development, but worst of all, it makes it readily apparent that Ted and his kids are absolute sociopath monsters in hindsight.

To be fair, though, HIMYM gleefully ripped of entire story archs from Friends unapologetically while bashing simultaneously bashing Friends, so the rivalry is not unwarranted.
