You know what is pointless? Forgiving transgressions, it's entirely unproductive by definition and the opponent may be emboldened. adjl posted... but if you're going for equality then there's more than just "you hit me so I'll hit you" to consider. If you hit them harder than they hit you, then your response is not equal, and you can't claim to be acting on egalitarian principles. That's perfectly egalitarian.
