Well, it boosts retention, doesn't it? The more value you think you get from a service, the less likely you are to cancel it. And they constantly have you following their original programming (assuming that you literally just mean their stuff, and not other things on the platform), you're probably going to stay as a customer. If there was no benefit for them, they wouldn't implement it.

okay, but is that commercial for orange is the new black that played while you were watching the office for the 29th time really going to be what persuades you to keep paying for netflix?

i think it's more that they want to boost views for their kinda shitty stuff that no one really cares about and doesn't watch
