There's always a "Desmond character".

In ACIV you're a programmer at "Totally Not Ubisoft, Honest", the Abstergo video game company sifting through the memories they recorded from Desmond's brain (and the character is supposed to represent you, the player - ie, YOU got hired to work for them). Ultimately, the modern-day Assassins try to recruit you (but it's left vague whether or not you accept).

In AC: Rogue you're a different programmer at "Totally Not Ubisoft, Honest", the Abstergo video game company sifting through the memories they recorded from Desmond's brain (and the character is supposed to represent you, the player - ie, YOU got hired to work for them). Ultimately, the modern-day Templars try to recruit you (but it's left vague whether or not you accept).

In AC:Unity you're a gamer who is playing a game on the Helix - the game console the Templars/Abstergo released based on the memories of the Assassins, and created via the work of the previous protagonists. Again, the player is supposed to literally BE -you-. And at the end of the game, you're recruited into the Assassins.

In AC:Syndicate you're the same player from Unity, now working directly for the Assassins.

That's why, as much as people who disliked the Assassin's Creed movie said things like "They should have just done it as a period piece and dropped the modern Animus stuff entirely", it's never going to happen - the developers clearly view the Animus as being a crucial part of the setting, no matter how it can limit their design choices (see also, why people are complaining about being able to choose the gender of the main character in Odyssey).

Layla's the first POV character they've used since Desmond to actually have a NAME, and to clearly be separate from the player themselves, but her present-day adventures aren't really all that different from the stuff the no-name faceless "you" characters were doing in the other games.
