The worst thing that I think about regarding extinction is in using cloning to bring back extinct animals, like you often hear suggested for wholly mammoths. Once that becomes a thing, I'm honestly worried that public support for conservation efforts is going to plummet as people just figure that we can bring back any animal we want from extinction. Sure, we'd bring back tigers and pandas and stuff like that, but thousands of species would slip through the cracks and even those that we bring back would be stuck extinct in the wild.

valid issue, its why i think the scientific community is being fairly low key about it. lots of dna/egg collection going on but not many serious discussions of cloning recently extinct animals.
