He gets his powers from the symbiote that first attaches to Spider-Man and that is why the suit retains some look that is similar to when Spider-Man used it. Eddie Brock hates Spider-Man from a previous incident and therefore when he gets the suit they both want to take Spider-Man down. Basically you can't find many villains this reliant on needing their heroic and good counterpart as Venom.
