Last month for National Voter Registration Day, over 800,000 people either updated their voter registration or registered to vote for the very first time.

The holiday is orchestrated by Nonprofit VOTE in collaboration with over 4,000 other organizations and major platforms, such as Google, Twitter, and Facebook.

Prior to the event on September 25th, the organizers for the holiday say that they had initially set a goal for at least 300,000 registrations and they were blown away by the campaigns overwhelming success.

Some us were saying, Hey, maybe well hit 400 or 500,000, Brian Miller, executive director of Nonprofit VOTE, told TIME. No one that I know of thought we would surpass 800,000 voter registrations. That surprised all of us. But I think its a sign of the interest in the midterms and the interest in having this unified day of action.

This years Registration Day breaks the previous record that was set in 2016 with 771,321 voter registrations. In 2014, there were only 154,500 registrations. The holiday was originally created in 2012.

Regardless of the outcome for the midterm elections, the organizers of the holiday are thrilled that so many Americans are getting involved in the electoral process

No matter what your politics are, this is a good thing.

Wish it was 80 million rather than 800,000 but still. Every voice matters, every vote matters.

Make sure you're registered CE. Don't be like Russell Brand.
