It's generally a derogatory term, which means using it preferentially to refer to one race more so than another would be considered racist.
I'd refer to any large group of people as a mob. Actually, off the top of my head I cant think of a "less offensive" term. Even group can be considered just as offensive in that scenario if you're looking that hard to be offended. This illustrates the hypocrisy though. The article repeatedly makes it about race and you guys defend it to the death and I use a simple word that defines a large group with no racial connotation and its somehow startlingly racist. But also... yeah, I believe if this story involved a black lady and white boy, they probably wouldn't be there... also i probably would've never heard about it because the media wouldnt want to report it
