Here is what you do:

- you use high pressure water cannons with cold water. You know, the ones designed for riot control.
- if things keep escalating you use tear gas too.
- if certain specific and identified individuals get violent, use rubber bullets on non-vital spots (no face shots, no head shots, no groin shots)

This is post is actually constructive. There are probably a lot of people out there (not just on the internet) who think shooting is the only option. There are many other alternatives that are much better.

That's a good start, but the problem is anti-riot measures aren't going to be effective in this instance. The US-Mexico border is nearly 2000 miles long. Water cannons keep people entering a building or gate, but here all they will do is cause people to scatter and enter by other means. It would send a "strong signal" that they're not welcome, but they've already assaulted and overcome a Mexican police barricade: it's not going to actually stop them.

You're dealing with 5000 people who are going to arrive with the intention of taking what they want, by force if necessary, and setting up a few water cannons isn't going to make them turn around and start walking back. ESPECIALLY if they've only brought enough supplies for a one way journey.

the tear gas used by the mexicans actually made the caravan retreat into guatemala.
