I was wondering the same thing

It reminds me of those horror stories where the person lives like two hours away from the distribution center but somehow the package gets routed to Haiti and then Puerto Rico and then back to the distribution center and then like two hours the other direction.


The answer is algorithms. Nobody does manual routing and the autonomy generating routes for everything isn't optimal for every package. So sometimes a bunch of packages get picked up from a shipping center, but based on the actual delivery schedule for your area it may get bounced around as a byproduct of that sub optimality.
