I met a very good friend in college playing through one of these games from start to finish at like 3am while half-unconscious. No mental demands, just mindlessly mowing down thousands of soldiers only to get crushed by LuBu in the blink of an eye. For that memory, I'll probably love this series forever.

this attitude towards them pisses me off, I don't see how they lack substance

Gameplay isn't that diverse even with new mechanics like magic and the move changes each character specialty offers. You'll rarely need to revise your strategy one you settle on one that works for you, so muscle memory of XXXY, XXXY, kicks in real fast. The cast of 170 characters is less about finding fun new ways to play, and more the promise that your favorite characters will make an appearance. The AI is never that smart, and when the difficulty spikes it's often because the CPU cheats, or the game's control scheme is ill-suited for this particular task (for example, platforming in MMO titles). The characters are always recycled designs at least four years old (it's a pro for nostalgia, but also kind of marks the title as a kind of shovelware).

If you want to zone out for bit and play something akin to an old school beat up though, you can hardly do better than these Musou titles.
