You're missing some important formative years in between them there. He found religion (My Sweet Lord), turned into a hippy (Here Comes The Sun), and forgot some of the basic rules of English (I Me Mine) for his lyric-writing.

Then when his career was over and he needed a pop hit to make money, he basically ended up playing six chords and writing extremely simple lyrics because it was 1987 and nostalgia-chasers would listen to anything put out by a Beatle at that point.

Basically the same logic that drives people today to seek out absolutely anything from the 90's.
