It's a genuine FF style combat system with parties and equipment and everything, streamlined/gimmicked just enough to keep the strategy but still be accessible to kids and noobs. Little things like the face-button action UI are even more ahead of its time than the action commands. Persona didn't even have that until 5. PM is like an adventure game that is only gimmicks. It's cool and cinematic but it doesn't have the strategic RPG gameplay. M&L seemed to have more strategic combat but I never got far in those so I dunno.
